2006 - No Quilt

No quilt was made in 2006 due to the fact that so many of the quilters had other commitments.

2005 Quilt

Sammies in a Whirl

The 2005 Rescue Quilt was a lap-sized quilt designed by Peggy Gaffney. The pattern was created in hand-dyed fabric of blue-greens and blues with white accents. The celebration of the Samoyed's whirwind approach to life, full of energy and and more bounce to the ounce. Each Samoued applique is offset by a pinwheel pieced square which gives the effect of spinning around the dogs.

2004 Quilt

Chasing Rainbows

The 2004 Rescue Quilt was called "Chasing Rainbows" because the National Specialty was held in "the land of OZ" or Kansas. This pictorial quilt done in rainbow colors depicts Samoyeds traveling the yellow brick road as they go off to see the Wizard. They are seen running past a field of sheep on one side and the poppy fields and haunted forest on the other while all the time seeking the rainbow. The rainbow theme was continued into the brightly colored boarder.

2003 Quilt

White Moments in Time

The 2003 Rescue Quilt was done in shades of maroon, green and beige against which the white of the Samoyeds stood out. The geometric piecing of interlocking squares and rectangles that form stars and which have created four stop-action squares where the Sams were captured responding to the four obedience cammands: come, stand, sit and down. This was a smaller quilt measuring 50" square.

2002 Quilt

Reflections

The 2002 quilt was meant to create a history of the early years of Samoyed dogs in the United States from the 1930's to the 1960's. The central medallion was made up of nine photographs printed on fabric of the most famous of these early great dogs most of whom are ancestors of dogs competing today. This central medallion was surrounded by applique depictions of the activities in which most Samoyeds compete: conformation, obedience, sled racing and herding. Nine patch corners were connected with bands of blue and white and the entire quilt had a dog paw border. The blue and white colors reflected the sky and snow of their arctic beginnings. The quilt was designed by Peggy Gaffney.

2001 Quilt

A Salute to the Mountains

In 2001, the National headed back out west to the high mountains. The design this year was scenic with a Samoyed and owner hiking complete with the Sam carrying the pack. This was surrounded with pieced borders of stars, flying geese, pine trees and mountains. the purple snowcapped peaks in shades of purple and white give way to the green of the lower elevations and the browns and greys of the rocks.

2000 Quilt

Dynasty in White

The 2000 Rescue Quilt was special in that it combined two medium. The central medallion was a stitch painted embroidery portrait of Am. Mex. International Champion, Elrond, Czar of Rivendell, BIS, BISS, CD who was a former Best In Show at the Samoyed National and was owned by quilter Peggy Gaffney who worked the portrait. This was surrounded by the bearpaw (Sampaw?) pattern in shades of rust and on a pure white background. The quilt was a salute to the quilter's art and was viewed by many since the National was centered in Maryland so many were able to attend.

1999 Quilt

Northern Lights

The 1999 Rescue Quilt was designed in shades of brilliant blue in a log cabin design, with stars over stitched with silver metallic thread to give it the look of stitchery art depicting the Northern Lights. This was a large bed quilt with teams of Samoyeds pulling the sled with driver as a border. The quilt is a mixture of piecing and applique. This fit the fact that the National Specialty moved north.

1998 Quilt

Samoyed and Champaign

In 1998, the Samoyed Club of America moved their National Specialty to California and it took place on the former site of Lawrence Welk's estate. Therefore the group picked up on his champaign music theme and did a quilt with Samoyeds and champaign glasses. This added a bubbly sparkle to the year's effort.

1997 Quilt

The Group Is Formed
In 1997 a group of Samoyed Fanciers who were members of the SAMFANS online chat group happened to be talking about ways to raise money to help Samoyed dogs who needed rescuing. They knew that the rescue groups were constantly in need of funding. As they chatted, they discovered that they had something in common though they had never met. They all quilted. So after chatting online and coming up with a design, they got to work mailing parts of the quilts to different members and finally getting it all put together. This diverse group of 8 people came from all over the US from New England to the Mid West to Alaska and even Great Britian. But from that group, friendships have grown and money raised to help these dogs that we love. The first quilt was designed to go with the SCA National theme of fall in New England and was raffled off at the National Specialty in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. It was a design of Maple Leaves in the colors of fall and Samoyeds.
